Brévent, Chamonix: what to do and the best views to admire

Some places take your breath away the moment you see them, and Le Brévent is one of them. Perched at an altitude of 2,525 meters facing Mont Blanc, this iconic peak in the Chamonix valley is one of the most spectacular spots in the French Alps. Whether you are a skier, a hiker, a fan of panoramic views, or simply looking for a breath of fresh air, Le Brévent has something for you. And often, much more than you ever imagined! Follow the guide.

What is Le Brévent?

Le Brévent is a summit located west of Chamonix, accessible from the town center via a system of ski lifts: a gondola from Chamonix to Planpraz (2,000 m), followed by a cable car that climbs to the summit at 2,525 m. Expect about twenty minutes to reach the top of Le Brévent from the valley. Convenient, right?

What makes this site truly unique is its geographical position. Le Brévent faces the Mont-Blanc massif, with an unobstructed, head-on view of the roof of Europe. No intervening valley, no visual obstacles: just you and 4,807 meters of granite and ice right in front of you. A face-to-face encounter that leaves a lasting impression!

Panoramas from Le Brévent: A 360° view

From the summit terrace of Le Brévent, the view of Mont-Blanc and its glaciers is simply striking. You can clearly distinguish the Aiguille du Midi, the Grandes Jorasses, the Bossons glacier, and many other peaks in the massif. At daybreak or in the late afternoon, when the golden light sets the eternal snows ablaze, the spectacle takes on an almost surreal dimension. If you are looking for a memorable sunset in Chamonix, Le Brévent is at the top of the list.

By turning slightly, you can also discover the Chamonix valley in its entirety, framed by its two massifs: Mont-Blanc to the east and the Aiguilles Rouges to the west. A 360° panorama that immediately puts everything into perspective.

Brévent-Flégère: A ski area in the heart of the Alps

The Brévent-Flégère area is much more than just a place to ski: it is a true alpine destination, recognized as one of the most beautiful resorts in Haute-Savoie and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. With 45 km of slopes accessible by cable car and gondola, it caters equally to families and seasoned skiers looking for vertical drop.

On the Brévent side, the routes descend into the heart of Chamonix, offering constant views of the Aiguille du Midi and the Mont-Blanc massif. On the Flégère side, you will find wider slopes and direct access to Lac Blanc, one of the most popular photo spots in the valley. Both sectors are connected by a cable car starting from L'Index, making the entire area fluid and enjoyable to explore in a single day.

In both winter and summer, webcams allow you to check real-time conditions before you head out: a practical way to adjust your plans based on the summit weather. The resort also offers comprehensive services on-site: equipment rentals, mountain restaurants with stunning views, and well-maintained ski lifts for a seamless experience.

For trail running enthusiasts, the area transforms into a summer playground starting in June: the marked trails from Planpraz toward the Aiguilles Rouges or in the direction of Lac du Brévent are among the most beautiful trail runs in Chamonix. A local guide can point you toward the best starting points for your level and the season!

What is there to do at Le Brévent in winter?

Skiing one of the most challenging areas in Chamonix

Le Brévent is part of the Chamonix Mont-Blanc ski area, connected to the Flégère sector. Together, they form a varied skiing space with runs for all levels, though it is primarily known for freeride and challenging mountain skiing. The slopes are often steep, the couloirs are tempting, and the panoramas are constant. It’s hard to find a better setting for skiing.

If you are planning your stay on the ski slopes in Chamonix, the Brévent-Flégère area definitely deserves a dedicated day, or even more. Experienced skiers will find their bliss in the off-piste couloirs, while families will appreciate the well-groomed blue and red runs on the Planpraz side.

Ski touring and off-piste excursions

Beyond the marked trails, Le Brévent is also a playground for ski touring enthusiasts. Several routes allow you to reach the summit on the ascent, then descend through pristine couloirs with breathtaking views. Please note that this activity requires experience and proper equipment, but it rewards the effort tenfold.

Hiking: The highlight of summer

As soon as the snow melts, Le Brévent becomes a hiker's paradise. The Tour du Mont-Blanc (TMB) trail passes through Planpraz, making Le Brévent a must-see stop on this world-famous trek. But even without doing the entire TMB, there are many outings accessible from the summit or from Planpraz.

The hike to the Le Brévent lake, nestled in a rocky cirque at 2,368 m, is one of the most beautiful mid-mountain walks in the area. Allow about 1.5 hours round-trip from Planpraz for a moderate effort and magnificent scenery. An ideal outing for families or hikers just starting out at altitude.

For the more athletic, Le Brévent is part of several demanding Chamonix trail running routes, particularly those that follow the Aiguilles Rouges ridge with a constant view of Mont-Blanc. It’s a treat for both your legs and your eyes!

The Le Brévent via ferrata

Less well-known than traditional hiking, the Le Brévent via ferrata is a wonderful surprise. Accessible from Planpraz, it offers an aerial route (with wall sections, ladders, and cables) for a sporty and challenging climb. It’s an ideal activity to spice up a day in the mountains and test your limits, all with Mont-Blanc as your backdrop.

Paragliding from Planpraz

Le Brévent is one of the most popular paragliding launch sites in the valley. From Planpraz, pilots regularly take to the skies to catch thermals and soar over Chamonix. Tandem flights with an instructor are available for beginners, allowing you to experience free flight without needing training—a unique way to see the Chamonix valley from above.

Family activities

Le Brévent isn't just for seasoned athletes. In summer, several fun activities are available around Planpraz for families with children: summer sledding, outdoor games, picnics with a view… and, of course, discovering alpine flora and fauna. Marmots, ibex, and wildflowers are often out and about, much to the delight of both children and adults.

How to get to Le Brévent?

Access is from the center of Chamonix, on foot from the Place de l'Église (allow 5 minutes to walk to the cable car station). The Chamonix-Planpraz cable car runs year-round, with a technical break in the autumn for maintenance. From Planpraz, the cable car takes you to the summit in just a few minutes.

In winter, the ski area is generally open from December to April. In summer, the lifts operate from late June to mid-September, depending on conditions. It is always advisable to check the schedules and weather forecast before heading out, as the altitude can bring surprises even in the middle of August.

Practical information for planning your visit to Le Brévent

Before you head out to discover Le Brévent, here is some useful information to help you make the most of your day. The cable car departing from Chamonix town center generally operates from 8:00 AM during peak season. In summer, it is recommended to leave early in the morning to enjoy the best light on Mont-Blanc and avoid the clouds that often gather in the early afternoon at this altitude.

The resort map can be downloaded from the official Chamonix Mont-Blanc website—a valuable tool for planning your routes and identifying starting points! Detailed information on slope conditions, lift schedules, and available activities is also posted at the ticket office.

If you're visiting with family, remember to book your tickets in advance during peak season: queues for the cable cars can be long on busy days. For those who enjoy eco-friendly tourism, please note that the area is a designated sensitive natural site: the local flora and fauna should be observed with respect, and visitors must stay on marked trails.

Where to stay to enjoy Le Brévent?

To fully enjoy Le Brévent, it’s important to choose the right base in the valley. Our Chamonix hotel and spa, Les Aiglons, welcomes you to a warm and refined setting, ideally located for exploring all the valley's hotspots. After a day in the fresh air, there’s nothing like a great spa to recover and prepare for your next adventure.
