Mont Blanc Tramway: Embark on the highest train in France

The Mont Blanc tramway, otherwise known as TMB, is a so-called cog train, i.e. equipped with a toothed central rail that ensures grip even on slopes with a significant difference in altitude, located in the department of Haute-Savoie. It is the highest train in France and is operated by the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc.

At the time of its creation, in 1905, the Mont-Blanc tramway was used to transport travelers to the summit of Mont-Blanc, by digging a long access tunnel. The difficulty of such a feat and the significant cost of the work did not make this extraordinary project possible. Especially since the First World War was declared in 1914, which discouraged engineers from pushing the Mont-Blanc tramway terminus even further.

The Mont-Blanc Tramway route

Open to tourists from 1913, however, the Mont-Blanc tramway allows access to Bionnassay glacier (only in summer). Mountaineers mainly use it as a means of transport to prepare for their ascent to the summit of Mont-Blanc. After a 1.5-hour journey, they arrive at the Mont-Blanc tramway terminus, at the Nid d'Aigle station, culminating at an altitude of more than 2,372 m. It is from this meeting point that mountaineers then reach the heights of the highest peak in Western Europe.

The Mont-Blanc tramway therefore starts at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains — Le Fayet station and begins its journey by crossing the cities of Fayet, then Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, before starting its ascent. It serves successively the Motivon, Sellières, Col-de-Voza stations, before stopping in Bellevue, only in winter for safety reasons. On the other hand, in summer, you can continue to Mont-Lacha, then to the Eagle's Nest.

Prices, prices and opening dates

Careful! The Mont-Blanc tramway is not open all year round. In fact, it is only accessible during high season periods, i.e. from mid-June to September in summer, and from mid-December to the end of April in winter. Count 4 to 6 round trips per day on board the two trains (nicknamed Jeanne and Marie) that share the route. Of course, the number of tours varies according to the day of the week and the season.

As for prices and rates, count between €17.90 for children under 14 and seniors over 65, and €21.00 for a one-way adult during the summer season (tram terminus in Bellevue). In winter, you can access the Eagle's Nest for the sum of €30.00 if you are an adult, and for the price of €25.50 for the reduced rates.

Note that there is also a family package that includes the Le Fayet -Nid d'Aigle return ticket for two adults and two young people under 14 at the price of €117.80. From the 3rd child onwards, the ticket is free (up to 5 maximum).
