The most beautiful summer hikes in Chamonix

1. L'Aiguillette des Houches

Less frequented than the famous Lac Blanc, theAiguillette des Houches is a destination that I always recommend with enthusiasm. Nestled within the Carlaveyron Nature Reserve, this peak rises to 2285 meters above sea level, majestically overlooking the village of Les Houches located below. It forms the western border of the Massif of Aiguilles Rouges and offers a spectacular viewpoint over the Mont-Blanc Massif as well as the Fiz Massif to the north. In addition to its breathtaking view, this place is a real haven of biodiversity. The meadows of Carlaveyron are home to a variety of ponds that serve as refuges for many animal species that you can observe during your summer hike in Chamonix.

2. The White Lake

Lac Blanc is at the top of my must-see places to visit. Despite the crowds in high season, the panoramas it offers are unparalleled and absolutely worth a visit! Located in the heart of Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, the Lac Blanc is located at an altitude of 2,352 meters. It consists of two parts:

  1. a shallow lower portion, approximately 3 meters;
  2. a deeper upper part, reaching almost 10 meters.

The waters of Lac Blanc flow into a torrent that flows into the Arve downstream, near the Place called “The Islands”, north of Chamonix. In the past, the rear part of the lake retained its snow cover until the end of summer (mid-August). However, due to climate change, the melting of ice and snow now occurs earlier in the season (end of June, beginning of July).

3. Le Lac Cornu

Among the jewels of the Aiguilles Rouges Massif are Lac Cornu and the Lacs Noirs. These lakes, resulting from glacial activity, enrich the Alpine landscape of their presence. Lake Cornu, perched at an altitude of 2276 meters, extends over 54.4 hectares with a depth of up to 22 meters and an estimated volume of water of about 550,000 cubic meters. Its waters flow via the Torrent du Lac Cornu to finally mix with the Diosaz downstream. Higher up are the Black Lakes, forming a duo whose waters flow first into the eponymous torrent, then into the Petit Lac before also joining La Diosaz, in natural waterfall. These are perfect places for a long and gentle summer hike in Chamonix.

4. Peclerey Mountain

This time, head east of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley for an ascent to Peclerey Mountain, one of the most unknown peaks in the region. Perched above the village of Argentière, this mountain promises a memorable getaway of tranquility and wild beauty. The paths, which are not very busy, lead through preserved landscapes. Among the highlights of this summer hike in Chamonix, the climb along the moraine of Glacier du Tour and the summit plateau stand out, offering a spectacular view of Mont-Blanc and the Aiguilles Rouges.

5. The North Balcony

The last Chamonix summer hike is that of the North Balcony. This hike is a must in the region, offering first of all a breathtaking view of the Mer de Glace before venturing to the foot of the majestic Aiguilles de Chamonix on an emblematic trail. Described as a “monster” for its physical requirements, the North Balcony requires good preparation: you have to count an accumulated altitude difference of 1550 meters, a distance of 16.4 kilometers and about 5 hours and 30 minutes of walking to complete this course.
