Visit Chamonix : what to see and what to do ?

back to the news

Visiting Chamonix is an opportunity to discover the most beautiful panoramas of the Alps. A stay of a few days at Le Refuge des Aiglons, with family or friends, will allow you to grasp all the essence and beauty of this legendary place. From the Mont-Blanc to the Mer de Glace and the waterfalls of the Vallée Blanche, don’t wait any longer to come and visit Chamonix!

Take the red cogwheel train to reach the Mer de Glace

Its name rings with awe, but the reality is just as good: the Mer de Glace is a place that will leave you speechless. Every year, thousands of visitors come to Chamonix for the chance to see this exceptional sight. To get to the Mer de Glace, the red Montenvers cogwheel train is a must. You board the train, make yourself comfortable and wait patiently to climb to an altitude of over 1913 metres. Here, serenity and beauty are the key words. Enough to fall asleep peacefully in the evening, with a mind full of beautiful memories…

Discover Mont-Blanc, on skis, on foot, or on snowshoes

Making a list of activities in Chamonix without mentioning the famous Mont-Blanc? You can’t! Mont Blanc is not only the most popular place in Chamonix, it is above all the most impressive. Skiers will have the pleasure of discovering the most beautiful off-piste trails, and hikers can walk or snowshoe along the Mont-Blanc. But everyone can enjoy the unparalleled beauty of the immaculate white landscape.

The absolute must-see? The Aiguille du Midi, one of the highest peaks of Mont Blanc. From a cable car, you can reach an altitude of 3,842 metres and enjoy a unique panorama. One of the most famous attractions is undoubtedly the “Pas dans le vide” (“Step into the void”), an incredible glass cage that overlooks the snow-covered massifs. Capable of supporting 1,500 kilos, this attraction is very popular in both winter and summer.

However, beware if you are afraid of heights! The impression of “walking in the void” is very realistic.

What about summer? When the sunny days arrive, Mont Blanc is invaded by nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Whether for walking, hiking, but also mountain biking or rafting, people flock to discover the joys of sunny Mont Blanc.

Enjoy the unique water spots in the Vallée Blanche

On beautiful summer days, you can also take advantage of the idyllic water spots to cool off! The Mont-Blanc Valley is famous for its numerous swimming spots. However, it is often necessary to walk a little to reach them. You can choose between the Cascade du Dard or the Cascade de Bérard, two waterfalls to visit on your own or with your partner. And even if the second one is a bit more difficult to reach, it is worth the effort!

At the foot of the Aiguille du Midi, at an altitude of about 2299 metres, there is also the Lac Bleu (“Blue Lake”). Very easy to reach, this lake will impress you with its bright blue-green colour which makes you want to dive without further delay. If the spot is easy to reach, the path leading to it is strewn with large stones. A word of advice? Be equipped with good walking shoes! And don’t forget to look up for a panoramic view of the Aiguilles Rouges massif and the Aiguille du Midi!

Enjoy the different golf courses in and around Chamonix

For golf lovers, Chamonix also has everything you can wish for. In the town and the surrounding area, there are many places to play! Among them, the Golf du Grand-Bornand offers a flat course, comprising 9 holes. With a breathtaking view of the Pointe Percée, players can combine the pleasure of playing with that of contemplating.

The Golf de Flaine – les Carroz is also very enjoyable. Its larger 18-hole course is located at an altitude of 1900 metres, at the Pierre Carrée pass. As far as the view is concerned, you will enjoy incredible views of Belladone, the Aravis chain and the Mont Blanc massif.

For those who want to be spoilt for choice, Les Arcs 1800 golf course has two courses, one of 9 and one of 18 holes. All levels are welcome!

Last place to mention, the Clusaz Golf Club. A little jewel of a course (2 x 6 holes), located on the Confins plateau. A warm atmosphere and a sumptuous panorama are guaranteed.

And because a visit to Chamonix is always very active, come and finish the day in style at Le Refuge! The hotel with its swimming pool and spa offer a multitude of services to relax you: games, bar, swimming pool, spa… Nothing better to rest after a day full of emotions.
