A short history of dog sledding

It is estimated that the practice of dog sledding dates back to about 6,000 BC. It was one of the only means of locomotion on snow and ice in the particularly cold northern regions of the world. Sled dogs are believed to have originated from an ancient lineage of wolves that bred with dogs. Gradually, dog sledding became a leisure activity, with organised races.

Sled dogs adapt very easily to sub-zero temperatures: their skin temperature is about 0°C on the muzzle and paws, compared to 37°C for lapdogs. This means that they do not expend too much heat and the snow does not melt on their paws, which considerably reduces the risk of frostbite. So you need not worry during your outing: sled dogs in Chamonix are not afraid of the cold!
