Visit the Bionnassay Glacier aboard the Tramway du Mont Blanc

Lovers of authentic Alpine villages will be delighted by the hamlet of Bionnassay, not far from Saint Gervais, in the heart of the Alps in Haute Savoie. However, it is undoubtedly the famous Bionnassay Glacier hike that attracts the most visitors. Discover the smallest of the large glaciers on the French side of Mont Blanc.

The Bionnassay Glacier

Almost 5 km long, surrounded at either end by two powerful moraines, the Glacier du Bionnassay covers an area of 430 hectares. And yet, its impressive proportions make it a modest glacier compared to the giants that dot Mont Blanc.

It rises above a hamlet of the same name perched at an altitude of 1,320 meters, in the heart of a site of outstanding beauty. Visitors can admire an exceptional panorama by taking one of the hiking trails to this unforgettable site.

The Bionnassay Glacier footbridge: a magical hike

For those who love to discover mountain scenery of unparalleled splendor, the Glacier du Bionnassay hike remains a must-do during any stay in Chamonix. The Glacier du Bionnassay hike itself is great fun, with ladders and handrails to help you on your way. Heading towards the Col du Tricot, you can pass through the Chalets de l'Are, then follow the left-hand path along the glacier to reach the Nid d'Aigle. On the right, you can admire the glacier's seracs and crevasses, with the Col du Tricot in the background. The Glacier de Bionnassay rises up in front of you. Following the Glacier du Bionnassay path, you descend along the glacial moraine to reach the GR5 Tour du Mont Blanc, heading for Bellevue. Be careful, however, as the crossing requires a certain amount of experience. The Glacier de Bionnassay footbridge, which spans the torrent, offers fantastic views (and thrills!), but requires sure footing! Access is closed in winter.

The Mont Blanc Tramway: the pleasure of hiking without the difficulty

If the Glacier de Bionnassay footbridge seems too perilous for you, you'll be delighted to know that there's an ideal alternative for enjoying the Glacier de Bionnassay trail with the whole family. The Tramway du Mont Blanc, or TMB, from Saint Gervais, takes you to the Nid d'Aigle station at Glacier du Bionnassay.

From the Nid d'Aigle refuge, you can take a short footpath for a one-hour round-trip hike accessible to all. Note, however, that in winter, the pretty cogwheel train only goes as far as Plateau de Bellevue, where you can enjoy a pleasant stroll through the heart of the Prarion ski area. It's well worth the climb, too!
