Chamonix's finest summer hikes
1. Aiguillette des Houches
Less frequented than the famous Lac Blanc, theAiguillette des Houches is a destination that I always enthusiastically recommend. Nestled within the Carlaveyron Nature Reserve, this peak rises to an altitude of 2285 metres, majestically overlooking the village of Les Houches below. It forms the western boundary of the Aiguilles Rouges massif and offers a spectacular view of the Mont-Blanc Massif and the Massif des Fiz to the north. In addition to its breathtaking views, the area is a veritable haven of biodiversity. The Carlaveyron meadows are home to a variety of ponds that serve as refuges for numerous animal species, which you can observe during your summer hike in Chamonix.
2. Lac Blanc
Lac Blanc is at the top of my must-visit list. Despite the crowds at the height of the season, the views it offers are unrivalled and absolutely worth the detour! Located in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, Lac Blanc stands at an altitude of 2,352 metres. It consists of two parts:
- a shallow lower section, about 3 metres deep;
- a deeper upper section, reaching almost 10 metres.
The waters of Lac Blanc drain into a torrent that flows into the Arve downstream, near Les Îles, north of Chamonix. In the past, the rear part of the lake retained its snow cover until late summer (mid-August). However, due to climate change, ice and snow melt earlier in the season (late June, early July).
3. Lac Cornu
Among the jewels in the crown of the Massif des Aiguilles Rouges are Lac Cornu and Lacs Noirs. These lakes, the result of glacial activity, enrich the Alpine landscape with their presence. Lac Cornu, perched at an altitude of 2,276 metres, covers 54.4 hectares, is 22 metres deep and has an estimated volume of water of around 550,000 cubic metres. Its waters flow via the Torrent du Lac Cornu to finally mix with the Diosaz downstream. Higher up are the Lacs Noirs, forming a duo whose waters flow first into the eponymous torrent, then into the Petit Lac before also joining the Diosaz, in a natural cascade. These are perfect spots for a long, gentle Chamonix summer hike.
4. Peclerey mountain
This time, we're heading east to the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley for an ascent to Montagne de Peclerey, one of the region's lesser-known peaks. Perched high above the village of Argentière, this mountain promises an escapade imbued with tranquillity and wild beauty. The little-traveled trails lead through unspoiled landscapes. Among the highlights of this summer hike in Chamonix, the ascent along the Glacier du Tour moraine and the summit plateau stand out, offering spectacular views of Mont-Blanc and the Aiguilles Rouges.
5. Le Balcon Nord
The last summer hike in Chamonix is the Balcon Nord. This hike is one of the region's must-dos, offering first a breathtaking view of the Mer de Glace before venturing to the foot of the majestic Aiguilles de Chamonix on an emblematic trail. Described as a "monster" for its physical demands, the Balcon Nord requires good preparation: a cumulative vertical drop of 1,550 meters, a distance of 16.4 kilometers and around 5 hours and 30 minutes of walking are required to complete the route.
