The Chamonix valley, which includes Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix, Argentière and Vallorcine, is dominated by Mont-Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak at 4,810 meters.
Temperatures in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
As the region has a mountain climate, temperatures, feelings and preventive measures vary greatly with the seasons.
On the whole, the cold season lasts 3 and a half months, from mid-November to early March. January and February are the coldest months, with temperatures well below 0°C, often reaching -10°C.
The mildest season starts at the end of May and lasts until mid-September. Temperatures in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc are very pleasant. The hottest months are July and August, with peaks between 23 and 27°C.
With altitude, both summer and winter, the mountains are much colder. At the top of Mont-Blanc, at a height of over 4,800 metres, temperatures can reach -40°C. The wind also rapidly reinforces the cold effect and the temperatures felt.
Another feature of Mont Blanc's weather is its sudden changes. Typical of mountain ranges, weather conditions can change rapidly, with cloudy skies, showers, snow, gusts of wind and fog in winter, or violent thunderstorms in summer.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a rainy town
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a rainy town. Over the year, rainfall is significant, averaging 985.9 mm. By comparison, precipitation in Paris is 35% lower.
As early as October-November, the first snowfalls, however rare, make their appearance in Chamonix. In winter, precipitation is heavy, with December, January and February being the wettest months, providing skiers with quality snow cover.
In spring, even April, the driest month, sees a lot of rain and humidity. In June, the thermometer is pleasant, but there are many rainy days.
July and August are months with little precipitation and more sunshine, but there is a high risk of thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by showers. September remains a favorable month with little rain.
The seasons in Chamonix
Chamonix is a leading tourist destination, attracting visitors in summer and winter alike. The best months to visit Chamonix and enjoy winter sports and summer outdoor activities are January, February, June, July, August, September and December.
Winter
Beware of snowfalls and negative mercury. But it's precisely these climatic conditions that are conducive to quality snowmaking. The best time to take full advantage of the ski slopes and other winter sports is from late January to mid-March.
Earlier, particularly in December, the number of runs open may be limited if the snow is not forthcoming. But if the white gold isn't there, you can still reach the highest peaks for off-piste or touring skiing.
Summertime
Summer is a great time to discover Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc valley. Hiking, climbing and discovering the flora and fauna are just some of the leisure activities that attract holidaymakers. However, the summer season is cool and short. Choose July or August for the most sunshine and mildest temperatures.
Temperatures vary greatly during the day in the mountains. Nights and mornings remain cold, so make sure you're properly equipped. Watch out for thunderstorms at the end of the day.
Spring and autumn
