A short history of dog sledding

It is estimated that dog sledding dates back to around 6,000 BC. It was one of the only means of locomotion on snow and ice in the particularly cold Nordic countries. Sled dogs are thought to have descended from an ancient line of wolves that bred with dogs. Gradually, dog sledding became a leisure activity, with organized races.

Sled dogs adapt very easily to sub-zero temperatures: their skin temperature is around 0°C on the muzzle and paws, compared with 37°C for lapdogs. As a result, they don't expend too much heat and the snow doesn't melt on their paws, considerably reducing the risk of frostbite. So don't worry during your activity: sled dogs in Chamonix don't fear the cold!
