Downhill skiing on and off piste
Chamonix is one of France's largest ski areas, with pistes ranging from green to black for skiers of all abilities. From theAiguille du Midi cable car (over 3,800 meters above sea level), you can also ski down the Vallée Blanche , with over 20 km of pistes and 2,000 meters of vertical drop: a mythical off-piste itinerary for all experienced skiers staying in the Chamonix valley. Discover the glacial world of the high mountains, and work with mountain guides on glaciers at the foot of the Mont Blanc Massif. Glide over the Mer de Glace with panoramic views from the Aiguilles de Chamonix to theAiguille Verte.
The Chamonix valley environment
An exceptional natural setting Chamonix Valley includes a multitude of varied and dazzling landscapes: eternal snows, glaciers, alpine meadows, forests, high-altitude lakes, wetlands and more. All the valley's communes are surrounded by greenery and vegetation. That's why these communities were quick to recognize the special character of their environment, but also its fragility and the need to protect it in order to preserve it. The Communauté de Communes has set up a number of initiatives designed to reconcile environmental protection, human activities, tourism and public awareness.
This involves protecting, managing and enhancing the natural areas of the Chamonix valley with its partners: over 90% of the area is covered by these measures. The Chamonix valley has 3 nature reserves: the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve (3,279 hectares), the Vallon de Bérard Nature Reserve (540 hectares) and the Carlaveyron Nature Reserve (598 hectares).

The valley in winter
The Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley is a world-renowned area in the imagination of skiers, snowboarders and winter walkers. Thanks to the magical atmosphere of the snow-covered villages, it's possible to enjoy a contemplative stroll to reconnect with nature, or a sporty ride to let off steam in the fresh air. The Grand-Montets area offers steep slopes, while the Brévent and Flégère areas are bathed in sunshine. All with a view of the roof of Europe, for a tandem paragliding flight from Planpraz!
Are you a speed fan? Get timed on the La Chavanne slope and compare your result with the slalom area of the Balme-Vallorcine ski area. The Balme-Vallorcine ski area has gentler runs, perfect for all levels of skier. In Les Houches, families of skiers and hikers will easily find what they're looking for.
The valley in summer
It's also possible to spend your summer in the Chamonix valley, with a wide range of sporting and cultural activities on offer. The French side of Mont Blanc
It's impossible to visit the Chamonix valley without taking the time to explore the Mont-Blanc region on the French side! This area boasts some of the most beautiful natural sites in France, including :
- Annecy, the little Venice of the Alps: admire the magnificent blue-green lake and canals of the old town, full of charm and authenticity. The Château d'Annecy overlooks the town and houses a Museum of Contemporary and Regional Art. Around the lake, stroll along the marina and don't forget to cross the Pont des Amours.
- Mont-Blanc country: between the Aravis massif and the Fiz mountain range, discover small, authentic villages with breathtaking panoramic views in the background. Plaine-Joux offers a panoramic view, with the famous "Sentier du Baroque".
- Lake Geneva: Thonon-les-Bains is a must-see in the Chamonix valley, with numerous tourist attractions including the Château de Ripailles and Château de Sonnaz. In the spa town of Evian-les-Bains, you can also discover the Villa Lumière (former property of the Lumière brothers) and the Palais Lumière. Finally, the fortified village of Yvoires is listed as one of France's most beautiful villages.
- The waterfalls of the Haut-Griffe valley: near the Sixt-Passy Nature Reserve in Haute-Savoie, discover the Haut-Giffre valley with its famous natural sites. The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval is a trail with some 30 waterfalls, including the majestic Cascade du Rouget.
